When i turn my car off, the screen on my gps says charging even after i turn its power off. is this draining my car battery?? or do i need to unplug it every time i turn my car off?

I use a pay-and-go card and don’t want to have to get a subscription or connect to the Internet just to use GPS (though I understand I must pay to get updated maps). Is there some way I can make it independent, like a standalone GPS unit you get in a car?
