Product Description

Keep your nüvi in place with this portable friction mount. It'll keep everything in plain sight when you need it and out of the way when you don't.

Place the mount on any stable surface, and adjust the position of your GPS to your liking. The friction mount weighs enough to keep your device put on the dash, even when sudden maneuvers are necessary. It's ideal for states in which the use of windshield suction mounts is illegal.

In addition to its convenience, you can quickly place your GPS out of sight, and without leaving any residue on the windshield, both handy for any potential prying eyes.

After 4 months of ownership, I am very happy with the Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard Mount. I always have it on the dashboard of my Toyota Matrix. I have rented a variety of cars when I bring it with me on business trips and vacations and it doesn’t move. It holds my Garmin 200w GPS in place all safe and sound.

The top piece can snap off for packing in a suitcase or a carry-on bag.

I like it much better than the windshield mount, which eventually looses it’s suction and falls to the floor with your precious GPS, making it susceptible to damage.

My only criticism is the price, even on Amazon. $25 is about $10 too much for what it is.

My daughter gave me her Nuvi 660 when she got a new car with a built-in nav. I was using it propped up on my windshield because the original discs didn’t stick. Amazon reviews helped me find this, and it works perfectly, nice and heavy. The round knob thing on the Nuvi clicks right into the holder, nothing else needed. It stays steady on the dashboard so you can tap the touchscreen, and you can tuck the whole thing out of sight on the floor when you park. Garmin should make this an option at purchase.

Highly recommend that Nuvi buyers purchase one of these at the same time. It makes the Nuvi easier to move from car-to-car and prevents possible damage to your Nuvi as a result of the standard suction cup mount falling off.

I don’t understand how it stays on the dash, but I don’t think a hurricane would move it !

Bulky and heavy, which does the job of keeping the GPS on the dash.

does fit in the glove box of my GTI, so hiding it is not a problem, best not to tell the world there’s a GPS in the car.

This portable mount is a perfect accessory for your Garmin GPS. You simply attach your GPS unit and place it on your dashboard. The mount does exactly what it is suppose to do – It stays in place! I did not want the mount on the windshield as it invites someone to break into the car to steal the GPS. Amazon prices were almost half of what they want in electronic stores. You won’t be unhappy with this purchase!

This was great! We used it on a recent trip and it was perfect. It can be placed where there is no blocking of the window, angled for the perfect view and it never moves from it’s position, no matter how curvy the roads or how fast you are going! It works!

This friction mounting system for the Garmin GPS serves its purpose beautifully. The “suction windshield mount” that was supplied with the Garmin GPS was inadequate and would break loose at random times, causing the unit to fall.

When the screen of my Garmin got scratched after falling off the windshield yet again, I ordered this dash mount.

I have used it in several cars with various slickness of dashboard surfaces. It stays put, even in my Corvette under hard cornering.

    Highly recommend the product.

This mount is absolutely neccessary in CA as suction cup mounts on the windshield are prohibited. Why ruin the dash of your car with the disc that’s included with the Nuvi. The beanbag works great on the dash of my car and truck. The Nuvi stays put and doesn’t move a bit despite hard acceleration, cornering and braking. The backing adapter for the NUVI will need to be removed from the suction cup mounting arm and popped onto the beanbag.

It works great with my Nuvi 250W! I replaced the windshield mount that came with my Nuvi with this. The windshield mount kept falling off the windshield. This friction mount doesn’t slide at all and I like the lock feature that keeps the angle I have chosen to view my Nuvi. It’s so portable! Just remove it from the dash and put it out of sight and no one is tempted to break into your car looking for your GPS. Two thumbs up!! Fast shipping with free super saver shipping…gotta love it.

This sure does blow away the window mount that comes with the Garmin. On a hot day you can take it from the dash board and put it on the floor so it is not cooking while you are gone. Also it is out of sight from would-be thieves. Also it is a lot easier to move from one car to another!! I have rated this 5 stars because there isn’t a 10 star available.

I am totally satisfied with the portable mount for my Nuvi. Things I like most about it are:

    It stays in place.

I can easily remove it and put it in another car (can’t do that with a fixed mount).

It’s not a piece of art but it seems well made.

  13. Jay Why — June 11, 2010 #

Does the job for the Garmin Nuvi 660! Absolutely the best stand in California because by law you cannot fix the GPS unit to the windshield. Sure its not pretty but its the best alternative you’ll find if you do the research.

Save yourself time. Make the purchase especially if you live in California or Minnnesota. Besides the suction mount (which comes with the GPS as part of the kit) lose ability to suction (especially with sun and heat) quickly.

Can you say “busted GPS” or “Oops, officer I didn’t know…Please don’t write that ticket”?

Excellent product. Fairly small and compact for friction/weight mount. Previously had one for Magellan product that was much heavier, bulkier, hard to transport. This one is reasonably small, fits in glove box, heavy enough to hold NUVI in place in my sedan but not too heavy to pack. Would buy another tomorrow! Highly recommended.

I am very pleased with the Garmin Friction mount for my Nuvi 360! I was tired of the black marks and the repeated trys to get my window mount to stay secure. I recently went a long trip and my Nuvi never moved. It is now easier to hide the mount under my seat too. Amazon, as usual, delivered on time and without a problem.

    Thanks Bob

I was spoiled with my old Garmin’s portable friction mount (dashboard bean bag mount) and was disappointed when I purchased the NUVI360 and it did no come with one; instead, it came with the suction mount. I tried the suction mount a few times but was very frustrated. First I had to move it to different locations on the windshield until I found the perfect spot. Then I had to repeat the same process on all the other vehicles I drive (I travel some and use it on rentals). I also did not like the unsightly ring marks it leaves on the windshield. The bean bag is quick to set up and take down. Oh, I also had problems with the suction mount falling off the windshield a couple of times in extreme hot weather. Can’t have that happen! I’m glad it did not damage the Nuvi.

I bought this after my window mount (that came with my GARMIN GPS) broke. I never liked the idea of window mount. It used to always fall down if I break hard. This one is easy to use, put on dashboard. Very steardy, doesn’t move at all (even if I take sharp turns). It fits perfectly in Mitsubishi Galant. Only problem with this is, it’s little bulky. But for durability, I would not mind it’s weight. It is worth the price.

This dashboard sandbag with a non-skid bottom is the ideal mount for a Garmin GPS. It uses the front bracket from the windshield mount to hold the GPS on the sandbag gooseneck. Regardless of quick starts, panic stops or sudden turns it has never shifted position.

It makes it easy to position the GPS so that it can be seen by both the driver and the copilot. Also when we get somewhere, the whole unit, including the GPS can be taken off the dash and hidden. With a visible windshield mount, the crooks think that there might be a GPS inside, even it you take it with you.

It also makes it very easy to move the unit between our car and our motorhome.

i bought this for my nuvi 350 after finding that my windshield on my accord sloped way to much to use the suction cup attachment. using the permanent dash mount was not an option for me. this works PERFECT! it does not move at all, even with sharp turns and sudden stops. it may have a large foot print, but that’s what keeps it steady. this is what the nuvi should come standard with, not the suction cup or dash mount!

The Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard is a wonderful product. It is ready to use out of the box. I use it for my Garmin nüvi 350 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator. Plugging the GPS on to the mount is very easy and so is unplugging it off of the mount. The mount itself is very stable sitting on either of our Dodge Caravan or Honda Accord. I haven’t had any incident with it sliding around when making tight/fast turns. It is also very convenient to move it out of sight when the car is parked outside. Overall, it is a very good product. I definitely recommend it to everyone.

This is a great product. It never slips on the dashboard no matter how hard I stop or corner. The suction cup mount that Garmin provided with my Nuvi 350 kept falling off the windshield. Not good for a $500 GPS. This is a good solution to that problem. Garmin should be providing this with their products in place of the poorly designed suction mount.

My Garmin GPS came with a pad that you glue to the dashboard. It was supposed to have a glue backing that held fast. After two days the Garmin fell off the pad. I tried again with the same results.

The pad that supposedly couldn’t be removed, peeled off easily.

A friend told me about the friction mount. It is great. I have been using it several weeks and the GPS does not move at all. You just place the friction mount on the dashboard and there it stays.

I recommend to my friends that they buy a Garmin GPS with the friction mount. You’ll love it.

This is a simple and easy way to conveniently place your GPS in just the right spot on the dash without the need to drill holes or use adhesive of any kind. It also maintains the easy portability of my Garmin Nuvi portable GPS — simply place on dash and plug in 12vdc adapter and you are in business. Why leave your GPS in plain view of potential thieves when it can quickly be stowed out-of-sight and just as quickly set-up again when you return to the vehicle? Highly recommended

Although there are already well over 2000 reviews, I wanted to add my own in response to some of the negative comments. I hesitated before purchasing this mount because it looked huge in the picture. However, we did not want to deal with sticky mounts and wanted to be able to use whatever solution we had in two different vehicles. For security, we also wanted to be able to quickly remove the GPS unit itself.

After watching the video review posted by another person here, the size of the mount was easy to see and we decided to give it a try. We have been extremely happy with the purchase. The mount is made of high quality materials, stays in place without any issues, and works flawlessly with our Garmin.

Several reviewers complained about the size in relation to the mount being too bulky to store in the glove box or other locations. I was baffled by these comments, personally, because we leave the mount in the car all the time. We do not feel it is necessary to “secure” the mount itself, only the GPS unit. We simply remove the GPS unit with one hand and store it away or tuck it in our pocket/bag after putting it in a protective case.

Other comments pertained to the mount sliding around after a while, and hypothesized it was due to prolonged exposure to heat and/or cold. Since we have purchasd the mount, we have been in temperatures between 25 and 100 degrees and experienced no residual issues. Our dashes tend to get very dusty, especially during the Spring, but that did not cause our mount to slide around or move out of place.

I have been in vehicles with very awkward hand/or small dash space, so if your dash is very small/awkward or your car extremely small, this mount will probably not meet your needs. However, even a window mounted GPS unit by itself would be a problem in a very small car. Overall, we highly recommend this for use with the compatible Garmin GPS units.

When I read an article which said thieves sometimes notice the residual ring on the windshield from suction cup mounts and break into those cars looking for GPS units, I started looking for a different type of mount. I soon found this unit which I bought and have now been happily using for more than 2 years. In that time I’ve used it with two different Garmin Nuvi units and there was no problem fitting either one. I leave the clip attached to this base and just remove the GPS itself, which is easy and quick. I just take the GPS with me and put the mount on the floor partly under my seat so it’s out of view. Since the mount isn’t stuck in place like a suction cup mount, I can reposition it however is most convenient for my reach. The mount does a good job of staying put for the most part on the dashboard of my car. Only rarely does it slide when I’m doing a hard turn at a relatively high speed. I highly recommend this mount to anyone with a Garmin GPS.

Bought it for my daughter to use with the Garmin c550 that I had just bought her. She loves it. We live in an area that has had many thefts of navigation systems from the car. Police have advised not only to remove GPS system when leaving the car, but to remove windshield based mount as well. They even suggest that you wipe off the mark the suction cup leaves on the window as the thieves are aware of that the suction cup mark means that a GPS system is in the car. The portable Friction Mount makes life a lot easier. And Amozon’s price was $20.00 less then Best Buy.

I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS system due to my moving out of the area in July. A window suction mount came with the unit–not being a great fan of suction mounts for anything, I looked for an alternative. This is when I found the portable friction mount for nuvi systems.

This is an awesome mount. It sits firmly on the dash board and you can angle your system any way you want it. I have been using this for 6 weeks now since my move and have never had a problem with it slipping, moving, or sliding. It stays firmly in place and I never worry that it will move when I am turning and stopping suddenly.

If you are looking for a secure mount for your nuvi system, this friction mount is the one to get. Amazon’s price was the best I found and had free shipping as well. You can’t go wrong with this mount and purchasing it from Amazon.com.

Instead repeating what literally THOUSANDS of people have posted here, let me just say that this kind of mount should be MANDATORY for Nuvi owners, as it absolutely holds like glue on your dash, is easy to put together, and makes it IMPOSSIBLE for thieves to figure out you have a GPS. I have an 05 Mitsubishi Galant, and this fits perfectly at EYE Level in the crook in between the dash and the side wall (see picture posted). When I park someplace, it takes exactly 10 seconds to slip my nuvi off, stash it away in the middle storage box, and slip the base under my seat, and VIOLA – what GPS? Again, if you are buying a nuvi, or already have one, this is MANDATORY!

This works perfectly to support my Garmin 850Garmin nüvi 850 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Voice Command and FM Transmitter (Soft Black). Keeps it steady, but allows some movemet to adjust the unit for optimum viewing. It has only moved once when I had to slam on my brakes (you know that situation when the guy in front of you @#&*^#!(^!#), and then it slid slowly across my huge Saturn VUE dashboard, with no harm to the GPS or delicate charger connection.

When I leave the car I put the GPS somewhere safe and just put this in the passenger floor area, or behind my seat (unplugged). Easy to use, perfectly satisfactory product. Wish there were more things in life like this!

I bought this type of GPS holder because the window mount that comes with the unit was in my line of vision and a little distracting. It would also fall off during temperature changes. I have since switched to the portable friction mount and have loved it. It’s easy to install and use and hasn’t moved an inch on my dash even though I drive in heavy traffic and have to brake hard every once in a while. We also live in a curvy area and it also hasn’t moved through curves. I would recommend this product!

I’ve had my nuvi for 18 months now and have tried 2 other mounts with varying degrees of success. I stumbled upon this one and based on other reviews ordered one. We got it just in time for our driving trip to Colorado and boy, was it a SUCCESS! It was stable, convenient and very, very easy. We not only use the navigation, but listen to books on tape through the garmin, so this was the best solution – another one I had seemed to block the output so that it was hard to hear the talking. This one is perfect for my needs!

Nice to not have a permanent or suction cup mount. All the comments I read about thievery are right on – what they can see they will take. I don’t ever leave the mount or the garmin in plain sight.

The mount performs flawlessly, even around corners – no sliding or anything.

I bought this for two reasons:

Security – GPS units are a highly prized target for thieves. They can walk down a row of parked cars and see a mount on the windshield or the mark left by the suction cup and assume a GPS is in the glove box. You can move this mount to the floor of the car/truck or glove box in 2 seconds and it leaves no mark. No sign of a GPS unit on the dash/windshield.

Mobility – I can unplug the charger and move it to my wifes car or the motorhome fast. It’s the easiest mobile mount there is for a Garmin at this time. I do not need to buy extra mounts for other vehicles. No glue pads on the dash.. It’s Great

It’s very stable… I drive windy, bumpy, rural roads and it does not move, slide at all. I drive a Jetta with a rounded dash and it does not move!

After our Nuvi 350 fell off the windshield for the 10th time on a trip to Boston, I had my wife pull the car up outside a BestBuy so I could run in to see if they had the beanbag. Everyone online loved it and I had nothing to lose. 3 minutes later I was back in the car and cutting the clamshell package open. Absolutely the best accessory for your Nuvi. Doesn’t budge an inch, keeps you legit in states with window-mount laws, stores on the floor in a pinch in unsavory neighborhoods and packs flat for trips. Perfect!

It does what it is intended to do, the GPS stays on the dash with no slipping and fit my Nuvi 750 perfectly. This product is useful for states that do not allow you to attach a GPS to your windshield (like California-even though a lot of people still do). It also resolves any issues you may have with the windshield mount (some people have had problems, I haven’t encountered any). With this mount you can easily move your GPS from car to car since all you need to do is take the mount with you. For storage it fits in your glove box or center consol. The mounting stem separates from the mounting yoke and you can store that piece in your case (as long as your case is large enough) Remember to move the slider to lock position when you place the stem back into the yoke. Amazon offered the best price. Most brick and motor stores were almost twice the price.

I have had numerous holders and this turns out to be the most convinient. I can move it to any location on the dash and will stay put. Also have moved it to my console when I wanted it without any problems. I do not have to remove my Garmin Nuvi 660 from the holder as I can move the whole unit and put it away when I exit the car. I like it alot. Great product and worth the minmal cost even though it looks ugly and a has a strange shape. Oh well, it does what it was made for exceptionaly well.

I can’t imagine my GPS without this. It holds the GPS right on the dash – even over bumpy roads. In the center of the bean bag unit is an “L” shaped bracket that is attached to the bean bag base and is meant to hold the GPS in place. It fits my nuvi 660 perfectly. The unit also has a push-button quick release so you can take your GPS off the dash and put it somewhere safely when you’re not in your vehicle. There are four “bean bags” surrounding the attachment “L”, and the whole thing has a contiguous rubber bottom on it. The bean bags make it flexible and the rubber bottom keeps everything in place. Before I purchased it I wondered if it would really stay on the dash and hold the GPS securely. It does.

I wanted a portable mount so I could remove it from my car easily. This mount is fantastic for that. It stays in place for the most part. Only once did it slide off my dash during my last trip (but I think that was mostly user error…placed way too close to the slope.) I also like that I was able to set it on the dash but then when I was tired of it up there, I placed it down near the gear shift. Not being stuck in one place all the time was really nice. When I stopped somewhere I could easily pop it into my center console.

But once in a while getting the screen out of the direct sunlight is a challange. I bought the portable mount to make it easier to use the GPS in anouthe car, but found the the ability to easily adjust the position out of the sun, was a great bonus.

Well, we’d tried everything else with no luck for our Nuvi 360. We used the suction cup mount (should be sucktion cup) on the windshield and it would always break the seal while driving. It would never stay up for more than a couple of days. We also tried it using the dash-mount plate that was provided and it failed similarly.

Enter the Garmin Bean Bag. This product works great. It stays where you put it. You can drive like a maniac and it still stays there. It’s a great purchase.

The drawbacks are: It is a bit clunky so you lose a bit of that sex-appeal that came with buying a Nuvi. Shame on Garmin for not providing a quality mount kit in the box. For the $800+ they charge on some of their products, you’d think they could figure out how to mount it.

Also, they only included the beanbag and the arm that holds the Nuvi. They didn’t include the part that connects to the Nuvi and swivels around. This makes it difficult to move the Nuvi from car to car, short of taking the entire beanbag.

I’d recommend this product to anyone with a Nuvi. I’m not really crazy about it (looks, ergonomics) but it does work flawlessly and seems to be the only solution available.

I had left the Nuvi 350’s suction cup on the windscreen for a long time. Bad idea, as over time the plastic on the suction cup melted (by sun) right onto the windscreen, leaving a black plastic ring on the windscreen after I forcefully removed the entire setup. Also the suction cup no longer stays on the windscreen for more than a few minutes.

I had a Garmin Street Pilot III, which came with its own sandbag mount out of the box. I was very happy with that, so I bought this one for the Nuvi. I wish Nuvi comes with this ‘Friction Mount’ instead of the lousy suction cup.

Works beautifully. No sliding around on the dash. Much easier to use than the windshield mount. I didn’t like leaving the empty windshield mount on the windshield to advertise that I even have a GPS, and it was a nuisance to keep applying it. This way I can put the entire mount on the floor, as others have mentioned. Plus, it’s easy to snap out my Nuvi 750 and slip in in my purse for extra security (not to mention an easy way to find my way back to the car in a large parking lot).

The old windshield mount was failing and was a target for thieves. The search for a new mount began. I thought this would be a good alternative to the regular mounts you see. I took it on a two week road trip and it did great. Never, not once did it move while the vehicle was in motion (including sharp turns) and was easy to hide when you would stop for the night or to go eat. Another great thing about it is that you can transfer it from vehicle to vehicle without a fuss.

Another nice feature is that your power cord can plug into the back of the mount, instead of directly into the GPS unit, making it very easy to remove the GPS unit from the mount without having to play with wires. Holding the joint with your left hand and the mount with your right apply firm pressure against the joint until it snaps in place. Make sure the GPS is off the mount When you take the mount off from the joint. Twist and pull at the same time and it comes off easy. Also, Just make sure the GPS is not attached to the mount when you first attach it to the joint or it might break. Attach the GPS when mount is on the joint. I used this mount on a trip from Florida to Massachusetts and back; it did exactly what it was advertised to do. Dashboard slippage was never a problem, and at every stop where I left the car, I simply removed it from the dash, leaving no tell-tale sign that a GPS was ever in use.

As for appearances, sure, I originally thought it appeared a bit obtrusive, but I got used to it quickly, and eventually, I even began to see it in a positive light.

Now, I would never go back to the original suction-cup device. That thing was a problem from day one, occasionally popping off without warning (maybe from sitting in the hot Florida sun all day), and forcing me to try to catch my GPS in mid-air, which obviously is not a good thing in heavy traffic.

I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 350 to use for work since I travel quite a bit for my job. I was hesitant about buying the friction mount because I worried that it wouldn’t stay put. I’m happy to report that I was wrong.

I recently used this friction mount with my Nuvi 350 on a long trip from NJ to Maine. Not only did it stay put exactly where I placed it on my dashboard for the entire trip, but it stayed put in a near accident. On one of the many highways we traveled, there was a car accident ahead and everyone in my lane slammed on the brakes. Now, mind you, we were all traveling at approximately 60-65 miles per hour. I’m most happy to report that we didn’t collide with anyone. —> Amazingly, the friction mount and my Nuvi didn’t move an inch.

You can buy this friction mount with complete confidence. If it didn’t move in the situation I was in, it won’t move with normal driving. Not only that, but it is easy to remove and stow your friction mount and Nuvi without leaving evidence that you have a GPS (now a favored target for theives).

I have become addicted to my Garmin Nuvi 660 and used it for six months with a successful windshield mount. But now I have bought a new car. I discovered that the windshield suction mount left an ugly black ring on the window of my old car. (I assume I can get this cleaned up when I detail the car for selling.)

So no way was I going to put one of those on my beautiful new car. I tried the Garmin dashboard mount but shied away from the “permanent” disc. I found the “temporary” disc was just not up to the job of holding this device in place — at least on my vehicle. I found this very frustrating. I read about the Portable Friction Mount, found a Best Buy store that had it in stock and ran out to buy it.

Though it is not terribly good looking, it does the job very well. I tried whipping around a few tight turns in parking lots and the whole thing stayed put. As another reviewer said, this lets you easily remove the thing and put it on the floor so it’s not obvious. That may be more valuable than you would think. I know somebody who removed his Garmin Nuvi (and took it with him) but left the window mount in place. The car was broken into and the window mount alone was stolen. (Probably that was a pretty frustrated thief.)

Also, this will be easy to transfer to a rental car. And it will make it easy for my wife to borrow my Nuvi. Hmmm!

This mount works great and I have not had any problem at all with it sliding around on the dash in any of the vehicles I drive. The only complaint I have is the instructions could be clearer on how to change from the windshield mount to this one. All it takes is a firm pull to separate the mount from the ball on the windshield mount, and then steady pressure to pop the ball in the mount on this one. Really easy to do after you figure out how to do it. I also like the ability to set the whole thing on the truck floor when I am going to be out of the vehicle in a public place. My original problem with the suction cup windshield mount was that it would fall off periodically. That had more to do with me not properly attaching it. Not good when driving and the turns are coming up fast. The friction mount was easier to use, held firmly onto the dashboard (even on sharp turns), and allowed the touch screen to be used without moving (try not doing that when you are driving, though). A bonus of the friction mount was it did not leave any telltale signs that a GPS unit was inside the car. Suction cup rings on the windshield are clues that a potential thief would look for.

I love my Garmin Nuvi. I use it a lot. However, I live in a hot climate and after a year or so the windshield suction cup had “melted” to the hot windowshield enough times through ordinary use that it would no longer create a seal and hold the Nuvi up. After about the tenth time that it fell off, hit my dash, and bounced down to the floor, I decided I needed a replacement. I thought about another suction cup, but I knew the same thing would start to happen and I WAS getting tired of the ring on the windshield when I took the cup off. I put off getting the dashboard friction mount because it looked big. However, it really isn’t once it’s in place. A bit more of my windshield is visible, something that always bothered my wife when she used the suction cup, and there’s no more unsightly ring on the windshield all the time. Does the job, does it well, and when not in use I just toss it in the trunk or on the back floorboard with my collapsible umbrella.

As everyone else said, this product is perfect. I use it with the Garmin 350 GPS even though it didn’t list that particular GPS as being compatible. Doesn’t slide, tilt or tip. Adjustable knob allows you to change the direction of the GPS without having to take the GPS off the mount. Only thing with me is I switch from my personal car to my work car almost on a daily basis and it becomes another thing to drag around. I can’t leave it in my personal car for fear of break-ins and I am not alwas guaranteed the same work car. Not Garmin’s fault though. They could have included this with the GPS system itself as mounting on windshields in California is illegal.

It’s quick and easy to lift the whole thing from the dash and store it when I park and don’t want anyone to see the unit from outside of the car.

We purchased this mount at the same time we ordered the Nuvi 350, because we did not want to have the suction mount (which is included with the Nuvi), attached to our windshield. The mount holds the Nuvi without any movement and is an excellent alternative to a suction cup mount.

  157. Briggsmo — June 13, 2010 #

Like so many other who have written reviews for this product, the suction mount that came with the Nuvi failed miserably leaving black goo all over my windshield and never sticking properly again. Realizing that it was a widespread problem, I looked for other mounting methods and found this one.

I am pleased with the effectiveness of this product. The friction between the mount and the dashboard holds quite well in standard driving — turns don’t seem to make it shift at all. I did notice that going over potholes and train tracks, that the mount does shift a little, but I found it easy to slide it back into place. I find that I like the flexibility of positioning this mount. With the windshield mount, the unit was always at a specified distance from me, but with this moveable mount I found that I could position the Nuvi closer to me to make it easier to see and easier to use. (An unexpected bonus) I also like that I can move it so that it isn’t obvious to thieves that I have a GPS unit in the car.

The only thing that I was a little disappointed with was the physical size of the mount. It is about 8 inches by 6 inches and takes up a large section of my small dashboard. Also its size makes storing it in the car difficult as it doesn’t fit in the glove box.

The positives definitely outweigh the negatives, but I still wish that Garmin didn’t have problems with the suction cups that made buying this a necessity.

This mount stays put very well. I haven’t had it move (that I could notice) at all during my driving adventures. The price here on Amazon is cheap enough for you to buy one for each car, truck, SUV and RV that you own. I highly recommend this item for anyone that owns or is thinking of buying a Garmin Nuvi GPS. The Garmin Portable Friction Mount for Nuvi is very sturdy and attaches to my Garmin Nuvi 660 with no problem. The beanbag design is awesome and works better than my old rubber weighted dashboard mount that I had with my previous SteetPilot c340. With that mount the rubber legs started to get too pliable and didn’t stay on my dash as firmly as it used to. My old mount sort of stayed on the dash but would jump around, slide a bit and one day when I made a very sharp fast turn, my c340 went flying onto the floor. With the Nuvi Beanbag Mount weighted design, there’s no chance of this happening. The mount stays put and sits firmly on my dashboard even on bumpy roads and sharp turns.

This mount is great though I wish it was included with my Garmin Nuvi 660 instead of the windshield mount.

When I recieved my order, I placed it on the dash of my RV. The angle of the dash is at about 30 degrees. The friction pad works flawlessly, but I had to wipe down the dashboard to remove any wax or dust prior to setting the pad. Once this is done, you can touch the screen, move the GPS device around or reposition it, and trust it will stay put. Overall a good product and within the guidelines of states restricting window mount devices. The top is sort of like a sand bag creating a little weight, while the bottom has a substantial amount of non skid dots that will not allow the pad to “scoot” while riding on the dash.

This mount works great. The selection of Garmin mounts is confusing as some are two parts and some are one. If you have a Nuvi with the included windshield mount, then this is the only part you need to buy. The included mount disassembles at the ball and socket joint and attaches to this one. I can’t say it will never come off the dash if I do some really high speed maneuver, but so far it’s held steady for all regular driving.

I like that it’s easy to move the mount and gps unit down to the floor when I park. Yeah a thief could still see it if they came right up to my car but at least it’s not obvious from halfway across the parking lot like a windshield mount is. A thief that sees an empty windshield mount is probably going to assume (correctly) that I’ve just put the unit in the glove compartment.

The suction cup would always fall off on rough roads and the worse this mount did was the angle of the gps would drop a little . Not nearly as bad as having it fall around your feet . It’s not perfect but it works . Be ready for it being a little awkward for storage when you park , it is a bit heavy and large for just setting down in a center console . Would I buy it again ? Without any hesitation and I won’t use the suction mount again .

So, decided to buy this item after going through so many reviews of this product in Amazon.

Finally, ordered this mount and installed it in my van. The installation took less than a minute. I have been using this mounting unit for the past 2 days and really like it. No need to stick it on the dashboard or anywhere else. Just place it anywhere in the dashboard and you are good to go. It stays on the dashboard firmly and haven’t noticed any movement so far. You can easily unplug and use it on any vehicle quickly.

I have a Nuvi 350 and where I want to put the nuvi on my RAV4’s dash is actually curve and a little V-shape, so I can’t get all 4 sides to be completely touching the dash, but it is working great! I put it where I can easily reach the nuvi (windshield mount would be farther away and I think it is safer to be able to reach it easier if you need to). While the friction mount on the bottom of the beanbag is pretty darn stable even with stops, starts, and turns I sometimes would find it sliding across the dash. The solution has been to use one of those little 6×4 inch mats sold at Radio Shack or Walmart for keeping cellphones on the dash. The mat is sticky on one side but leaves no marks or glue. I have not had one slide since using the mat. I even bring the mat with me in rental cars. This gives a very secure mount that is very easy to take from car to car.

When I realized that my window mount was difficult to use and left marks on the window, I looked for an alternative. Garmin provides a plastic disk that can be stuck to the dashboard, but I am opposed to messing up my car by attaching any device permanently to any part of my car.

When I first saw the friction mount, I didn’t think it would work all that well, but I was wrong, it is excellent. It has never slipped, even under the most vigorous driving conditions. This thing is great, I highly recommend it to anyone who is reluctant to mess up their dash, or window by using things that mar the surface.

I’m a frequent business traveller, and I like having a portable GPS unit to take with me on the road so that I can use it in rental cars. Last year (summer 2006) I got a Garmin Nuvi 350, which included a suction cup car mount. The problem was that it required moistening before mounting, which is kind of nasty when you don’t have a bottle of water handy. Over time, the suction cup deteriorated and wouldn’t hold for very long to the glass. When I saw that Amazon carried a friction mount for the Nuvi, I ordered it right away.

The friction mount is weighted and has a non-slip bottom surface, so it just sits on top of the dashboard. It’s never slid so much as a millimeter, even when I make the occasional high-speed turn. Yes, it’s a bit bulkier and, out of necessity, significantly heavier than the suction cup mount, but it’s more than a fair trade-off.

If you have a Nuvi GPS unit, don’t wait. Just get the friction mount and pitch the suction cup mount in the trash.

The GPS unit comes with a suction cup mount, but if you’re going to move it between cars, the friction mount is MUCH easier to grab and go. Also the wires go directly into it, so if you want to snap off the unit to go walking around, it’s much easier.

This is a well designed accessory for the Nuvi 350. Sits firmly on the

This is a great product. We live in Phoenix and the suction window or sticky dash mounts just will not stay put in the summer. This does not leave any marks that need to be cleaned once removed.

This works great and we were able to take our smaller, more fuel efficient vehicle on vacation and just put it on the dashboard. It is easy to put in the console when you get out of the vehicle.

I travel, and when I do I often have a rental car and an unfamilar city. This is a great way to mount your little garmin GPS system. Simple, effective and only slightly overpriced it is handy.

I also like it as it breaks down easy and can get your GPS out of view which can be handy so your car isn’t broken into and GPS taken. This is not uncommon (having happened already to me once). So its even handy for your own car if you’re going somewhere you don’t know.

Short form – it’s simple and works.

Cons – slightly bulky and heavy but seemingly necessarily so by design.

This mount works great on your dashboard. The GPS stays right where you put it with the exception of very bumpy roads (which is to be expected since it requires weight to hold it in place, therefore, airborne= no weight= it moves). This accessory is indispensible if you prefer a portable vs a permanent GPS set-up in your vehicle. Our 250W clips easily to the holder and can easily be rotated for optimum viewing by either the passenger or driver. The friction mount base stays in place on the cowling in both our Saab 9-5 and Honda Ridgeline with no slippage whatsoever. It can’t be beat either for optimizing security for your GPS device because the entire unit can simply be moved out of sight or removed entirely when you exit the vehicle. The Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard Mount works like a champ and lives up to its advertisements. It’s much easier to mount/dismount on the dash than the stick-to-the-windshield type and leaves no visible GPS trace for potential thieves. It stores nicely under the seat or in the glove compartment when not in use. My fears that it would slide around my dash were unfounded–it stays put and has a locking mechanism to keep the GPS from moving. One caution: my Jeep Liberty has a narrow dashboard with its defrosters located dead-center. This mount’s size actually obstructs a portion of the defroster vent due to its size. Could be problematic during the winter months.

I got this product on a “free shipping” basis and it arrived in perfect condition less than 36 hours later (I ordered around midnight).

It should be standard equipment at time of purchase of the GPS unit instead of the problematic “lick it and stick it” suction cup mount. The suction cup tends to lose it’s grip to your windshield, and it if you do “lick it”, it MUST be removed after each use lest it bond to your windshield and require a knife for removal, leaving an ugly little black circle on your windshield, and damaging the “stick to it”ness of the mount.

THIS product, on the other hand, lies on your dashboard, does not slip when cornering, is easy to remove and place under your seat (an invaluable security feature, not tempting thieves) for hiding. It is also easier to rearrange or reposition. If your navigator has vision problems, it is easy to grab, look at closely, then put back.

A little pricey at $27+, but worth it, and not $40 like it is at Circuit City.

I had previously used this type of mount in a rental car. I was impresssed that it stayed where placed on the dashboard, and wasn’t a hassel to move when parking. It’s totally portable and doesn’t leave any annoying marks on the dashboard of the vehicle. I decided to purchase this sandbag dashmount as a replacement for the Nuvi 360’s suction cup mount. Since several states prohibit suction cup mounts on windshields and suction cup mounts don’t work well in extreme cold or heat, I purchased this optional mount at the same time I purchased my Garmin GPS unit. It works perfectly. The lock unlock unit is easy to use and to disassemble. I do wish it came as an option with the Garmin GPS units instead of the suction mounts which would avoid the additional expense of purchasing it separately, but this mount has met all of my expectations. And forget about trying to get it to move by taking turns or stopping–you and everything else in the car will fail before this things moves. Its a must have for long sloped windsheild–like vans–where the suction cup places it too far away to reach. The friction mount makes hiding it under the seat or taking it along easy, and it works great for a second car or rental. In my opinion it is preferable to have the Nuvi mounted on the dash and not the winshield with a suction mount. An excellent purchase that provides the versatility of being able to be used in virtually any vehicle with a dashboard and there is no complicated installation process; just put it in the position you like, adjust the view and bingo you are ready to go. It looks baggy, not as clean as windsheild mount. But it works well. I can easily move it to the passenger seat to avoid sun heat or hide it when not using. You can rotate it 360 degrees.

I have been using the suction cup mount since I bought my Garmin. It worked well, but ended coming off the windshield at inopportune time.

This mount is easy and makes it easy to comply with new California regulations. With the Garmin attached, it fits on the dash in the left corner just where it is supposed to be!

I bought my husband a Garmin Nuvi GPS for his birthday and he and a friend took it for a trial run on a five-hour drive “up north.” The suction-cup window mount that comes with the Nuvi is annoying, at best, because it doesn’t stay adhered to the windshield the way it should (whose windshield, really, is as clean as it should be, right?).

So when I told him this dashboard mount was available instead, he jumped at the idea and we ordered one immediately. We have used it several times since it arrived. The GPS connects securely to the mount via a ball-and-socket-style system, yet we’re able to swivel the GPS quickly and easily. The dashboard mount is heavy and “grippy” enough that it stays put on the dashboard, even during sharp turns. We love this accessory and the ease of its use … and as a result, we use our GPS more often–even just for fun, when we actually know where we’re going.

I purchased a Garmin Nuvi 360 a couple months ago and wanted an option that did not involve mounting the device on my windshield. This Friction Mount works well and makes it super easy to move the GPS to multiple vehicles without fooling around with suction cups. Depending on how big your dashboard is, I would definitely recommend getting this mount.

In 3 months of use, the mount has never failed, keeping the GPS right where I want it. It also makes it easy when you have a passenger – you can easily transfer the unit and the mount to the other side of the dashboard so they can reach it and “navigate” while you concentrate on driving.

This weighted mount works perfectly, especially if you use your gps in different vehicles, rentals, etc. like I do. It folds up nicely for your gps bag, and attaches to a variety of garmin units including the nuvi760. We use a couple of these in our cars and they work great, at least for most dashboards. Definitely recommend one!

I purchased this item from Amazon with the initial purchase of a Nuvi 350 Unit (also reviewed) and have found it to be a very good add on. The bracket included with the Nuvi Unit allows for not only the ability to attach the unit but as well a place for power cord for the vehicle. Once attached to the bean bag friction mount it’s a snap to attach or remove the Nuvi Unit. The mount holds steady in its place and does not seem to slide around with vehicle movement.

When mounting the bracket to the friction mount, do so prior to attaching the Nuvi GPS as it is a fairly tight fit and requires some force to snap in place. Once attached however, it really does not need to be removed as you can take the friction mount from vehicle to vehicle and seems adaptable to any dash I have thus far placed it on.

All, in all I would recommend this over the suction cup mount provided as it offers a much better alternative for keeping your Garmin Nuvi secure in its place.

One final suggestion, make sure you order the correct unit for your GPS. Some have ordered the friction mount not realizing that they have purchased just the platform minus the mounting stem. Amazon’s # is 010-10908-00

Here in California it is illegal to drive with your GPS on the windshield – besides if you leave the holder on the window, thieves will know that you have one and break in thinking it is in the glove compartment or under the seat. My Garmin 550 C Street Pilot stays in place and it is easy to detach and take it with me when I leave the car. Too bad the the mount itself is too big to put in my purse, but it is easy enough to stash in the car when I leave. I usually put it under the floor mat. A good and clever product.

I justed pulled my Nuvi 660 off the window attachment, the ball just popped right out, then pushed it onto this ball. It works great, even has a lock/unlock, so you can slide the GPS out of the base easily, or lock it into place. It’s easy to move the GPS to get just the right angle but it stays put once It’s how I like it. I don’t have too much trouble with the unit sliding around. I have a large, flat dash and if it were going anywhere, there’s nothing to stop it, but it stays where I put it(I’m not a speeder and don’t take turns sharper than I have to). As I live in California where I can’t use the window attachment, I wish it would have come with this option. I wouldn’t want to stick sticky tape on my leather dash. So far, I”m real happy with it.

UPDATE: After a month or so driving around with this thing on my dash, I’m as happy as ever. It hasn’t moved at all, over pumps, up or down really steep hills, even with the power cord pulling on it (as I have it plugged into my cigarette lighter all the time). It’s light enough and small enough to move easily and tuck away, it doesn’t get in the way at all when I’m driving. I think it’s perfect and I love it.

The first time I tried this mount was in a rental car for a Garmin C530, and I never thought it would stay on the slightly sloping dash of the Pontiac Grand Prix but it held firm going up and down San Francisco’s hilly roads. That prompted me to buy one for my car. Essentially this mount is a bean bag with a mouse pad like rubber base but its engineered to stay where you put it and not slide around unless you move it. The good thing is that it stays put even if you brake suddenly, and if you drive in bumper to bumper rush hour traffic like me every day you’ll appreciate this even more!

    The advantages are:

    - No sticking on windshield. This is a BIG advantage as the windshield mount starts to come off easily after a year of usage, less if you leave it in your car while it’s parked in the sun. There is nothing worse than your GPS sliding off while you’re driving round a tricky bend, especially if you are new to the area. Sometimes it can be downright dangerous.

    - The windshield mount also alerts thieves that a GPS is in the car. A friction mount can be placed down under the car seat when you leave the car without needing to disconnect anything so that you’re ready to go quickly when you come back to the car.

    - The other big advantage is the ability to move it around to the position you want it. If a passenger is sitting in your car you can just slide it to their side and they can input the information while you are driving. It also makes it easy to slide it closer to yourself. Since I have the Nuvi 660 I often make calls with the bluetooth feature while driving, it is easy to slide it towards me when I am speaking to someone in order to get better voice reception.

This mount works for all Nuvis as they have the “snap the ball in the joint”. If you buy any model of Nuvi then this is all you need, no other adapter parts are needed. It’s also easy to switch this mount between cars or move it to a rental car when you travel. It has been the best and most useful accessory I could buy for my Nuvi 660.

I recently (Nov, 2007) purchased a Garmin Portable Friction Mount for my Nuvi 650. Well, I am happy to report it works just as described. It is easy to use and stays on the dashboard. It is easy to detach so that I can slip it under my seat and take my 650 with me or hide it somewhere. I highly recommend this as a much better alternative to using the suction mount that comes with the unit. Using the friction mount is a way not to leave a mark on my windshield that is a giveaway to potential thieves that I have a gps unit. Also, in some states it is illegal to use a suction mount.

I strongly suggest that Garmin include this mount with the unit instead of the suction mount.

I bought my friction mount on Amazon.com for under $28 with free shipping.

I also highly recommend the Garmin Nuvi 650. I got it at Costco.com for $299.99 plus some fees.

It stays put on the dash and can be easily put out of sight without detatching anything. Good for rest stops and such. I like having the nuvi mounted on the dashboard much better than on the windshield. This mount is weighted just right and has a surface on the bottom that will not allow it to slide on the dash. My only complaint is that the little bean bags on the edges make it a little more difficult for me to get my thumb under the release button to remove the nuvi. This is not a big deal.

I bought this for a trip to California when I learned that they do not permit you to affix anything to your windshield. Now that I’m back in Ohio, the windshield mount has remained in the box. It took only a moment to attach part of the mount that came with my Nuvi to this friction mount. The mount is smaller than it looks, and it took up surprisingly little room in my carry-on when I carried it onto the plane.

Most importantly, the thing really does stay put. I drive in a fairly “spirited” manner, and before buying it I had visions of it flying off the dash. But it has yet to move an inch. So far I’ve used it in a Mazda RX-8, a Chrysler 300, a Nissan Maxima, and a Dodge Durango. In the interest of full disclosure, I will say that my Nuvi 350 is fairly small and light.

When I arrive somewhere I simply lift it off the dash to toss it in the trunk or on the floor behind the driver’s seat. If you take the GPS unit off of it, it actually fits in the compartment under my center arm rest (except in the RX-8). It also makes it really easy to bring the GPS in the house or to move it from car to car.

All in all, a great little device. Perhaps a bit pricey for something so simple, but well worth it at the end of the day.

I often move my nuvi between cars, and this makes it a very easy process. There is enough grip in the mount to prevent sliding and enough to allow adequate finger pressure on the touch screen to make selections without disrupting the position of the gps. Then I searched and found this friction mount and have been extremely pleased with it. It sits my GPS down lower and within my field of vision. I don’t have to look away from the road to reference it. I also don’t have to worry that the suction will release and the GPS fall to the floor of my car. So I live in off-campus housing for school, and my car is usually parked in a parking garage for a better part of the month. The problem with having the little suction cup is that if its still there even with out the GPS, there is a risk of it being stolen (theft is a very common occurrence on a college campus). Then taking it off becomes a hassle, since well A) there is a residue on the windshield and B) the hope that successive reapplications of the suction cup will actually hold after the suction cup has either collected dust or become brittle.

The solution? Well this friction mount works really well. At first I though perhaps it would slip off, but the rubber mount and the weight (little bean bag weights) hold it down firm. I don’t have to worry about the windshield residue or even taking something off my windshield anymore. All I do is park my car, take off my GPS and take it with me (I never leave it in my car) and then take the mount and stuff it just in front of the passenger’s seat. Works perfectly!

The only complaints I have is that its a little bulky but often times it is still possible to hide. Also, the constant removal from the dash to the floor does get some dust underneath so you have to brush it off every now and then.

All in all, very useful product. As long as you’re not making sudden turns (and I mean like practically drifting) then this thing will just stay in place. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to replace that annoying suction cup on the windshield.

It is easy to plop on the floor by the seats when out of the vehicle and is a darn site more reliable than the windshield mount supplied with my 660! It is a little bulky to take in a suitcase if you are embarking on a “fly/drive” and in these days of “airline robbery” with baggage charges, one might need to take that into consideration however it is easy to transfer from car to car and is therefore worth it’s weight!

I’d read other reviews on this mount and decided to try one. What a change! It’s easy to put in and remove. It’s very stable and can simply be taken off the dashboard and put in the trunk when not in use. You can also simply turn the whole thing or move it on your dashboard with one hand to achieve the best viewing angle.

The only thing you need to keep in mind is that for stability it is somewhat wide, which means that it won’t fit in most glove compartments. For most of us, that’s not an issue.

I really didn’t think a ‘friction mount’ would really stay in place, especially in my Honda Civic with a dashboard full of angles and curves…but, because of the dashboard/windshield designs, my Nuvi was so far away (with the suction mount) that it was hard to use the touch-screen, not to mention read the screen with my poor eyesight, so I took a chance. It worked perfectly! Before I got it to the car, I had it on the back of the couch, just amazed at the angles in which I could place it without any sliding. I eventually placed it, not on the dash, but in a cubbyhole where the dash meets the console. The wires/cables are mostly in the cubbyhole too, since both connections were also nearby, and the mount hides the cables and fills the space between the hole & mount perfectly so the Nuvi isn’t going anywhere, and yet I can adjust the it’s angle for best viewing. No more suction cup rings on MY windshield!

It is especially great for minivans with the windshield out of reach unless you want to place the suction mount way up in your line of sight to block the view on the street.

This thing sits like a rock. Even on curved dash boards. Maybe unless you drive like a formula 1 pilot.

I was a little skeptical as to whether this would really work, but so far it has done the job with no problems at all. My dashboard is very curved and sculpted, but that doesn’t matter. Since my windshield is far away and slopes steeply, this is just what I needed. Just put in where you want it on the dashboard, and you’re good to go. So far the mount has not even shifted its position when I’m driving. Fills the basic requirements for a good product: simple to use, reliable, and does what it’s supposed to.

With almost 100 reviews and most of them 5 stars, its a sure bet that the friction mount is a great product. I purchased this product almost two months ago and like most people, I have had no complaints. You can place this mount anywhere on the dash and it will stay put.

My only regret is that I did not discover this product sooner. When I was using the suction mount that came with the Nuvi 350, it fell off my car’s windsheild twice. Thankfully, it did not cause an accident and does not appear to have caused any damage to the Nuvi.

I bought the friction mount a couple of weeks ago and have been very pleased. No slipping and no ring on the windshield. Another plus is the mount allows the gps to be closer to the driver. When using the windshield mount, my gps is situated at arms legnth from the driver seat. Having it closer with the friction mount is easier on the eyes and the shoulder.

This is important if you have a convertible, as thieves will steal it if they see it! This Friction Mount is stable and allows me to hide the Mount and the GPS when I leave the car. Good product. I was a bit skeptical about whether this mount would work without sliding around the dash. It somehow molds the 3 small feet to the dashboard and doesn’t move, even in turns. It’s very simple to install and you simply lift to remove from the dash and place it and your GPS outside the view of passers by. It’s much lighter than I expected and can be taken on trips easily by fitting into a carry on or in a suit case. Great, functional product for a reasonable price!

As one of the other reviewers stated, it is unclear whether certain Garmin GPS units require one or more additional parts for the portable mounts. This portable friction mount works perfectly with the Garmin Nuvi 660 — you do need the bracket that holds the GPS unit from the suction cup mount that ships with the Nuvi 660. Just remove it and snap it on to the ball of the friction mount.

The mount itself works perfectly — my GPS stays put in typical California driving (which has included a few sudden braking maneuvers at rush hour). Excellent solution for those who want to be able to use the GPS in multiple vehicles.

I bought this friction mount for my Nuvi 350, and used both on a recent driving vacation. Both worked even better than expected!

Amazon’s listings are a little confusing–If you have a Nuvi, don’t buy the one that says “for Garmin GPS”. Get this one instead. With this one, you don’t need to purchase anything else, just use the little bracket that comes with the Nuvi unit. (Put the bracket onto the mount without the GPS in it–it takes some pressure or a little twisting to get the bracket to snap onto the ball of the mount. But once it’s on, you won’t need to take the bracket off the mount. The GPS snaps into and out of the bracket easily–the bracket and mount stay together as one piece.)

The literature with the GPS unit said that the dash mount adhesive is hard to remove, so I didn’t want that on my car’s dash. Some reviews said the windshield mount could melt to the glass and I didn’t want that, either. Also, some say that thieves will break into your car even if they can only see the windshield mount, assuming the GPS is in the car somewhere. So, I wanted the friction mount. It was about $28 at amazon.

After using it, I like it even better than I thought I would. It holds VERY well; I never had a problem with it slipping even once. It’s easy to reposition, for example if the sun is hitting it the wrong way, and it’s easy to put into the console when you park so that nothing shows to tempt theives. Also, it can just stay plugged in to the car’s power outlet. The cord plugs into the bracket on the mount instead of directly into the Nuvi, which is convenient. The Nuvi unit itself easily releases from the mount, with no cords to unplug, and is easy to take with you.

The only disadvantages I can come up with are that it is a separate purchase (but is complete), and it’s not beautiful (but neither are the other mounts, I guess).

If you can’t or don’t want to use the windshield or permanent dash mounts, try this one. I’m glad I bought it.

A suggestion to amazon would be to describe all these mounts & other accessories a little better–lots of postings say they bought the wrong mount or bought accessories that were already included with the GPS unit, because they were listed on the product page with the GPS unit.

By the way, I love the Nuvi 350!

I also love the fact that I don’t have to mount my GPS to the windshield and leave that nasty ring on it. It’s also easy after the trip or during to take your mount off and stick it in your glove compartment for safe keeping.

I have a Honda Civic, and this mount sits perfectly on the Dash, without moving an INCH. It has a smart design, and the GPS can lock easily onto the hook. The hook can even be detatched from the base for easy access. I have read a few negative reviews about how this mount does not stay put on some dashboards. I think that would be a very small minority, as is evident from the overwhelmingly positive reviews.

I live in CA where it is illeagal to affix items on the windshield, and besides when driving at night and using the suction mount on windshield I would get a glare reflection on the windshield. Anyway using the auto friction mount with my Nuvi 360 on my dash eliminates this problem. I tried using the disc that’s included w/the Nuvi along with the suction cup mount but after a while the glue on the disc started giving way and eventually came right off the dash, thankfully not leaving any glue residue on my dashboard.

I commute over a whindy mountain road and this mount stays put. I have never had it slide or move on me. I’ve been known to drive “spiritedly” around some of the turns and this thing stays put, also had to brake hard (enough that ABS was engaged) and it didn’t budge.

Item is on the pricey side but it is well worth it to me, especially if you want to switch between cars. Highly recommended!

I had a Nuvi 350 with the windshield suction cup mount and it was always leaving a mark on the windshield when removed, and it was a long reach from the seats, especially when wearing seatbelts. This is an excellent alternative, it sits on the dash, can me moved to any location on the dash and is easy to reach. It is very stable, never slides when turning or braking, and has better viewing options than the window mount. When I park the car I just remove the Nuvi and put the mount under the seat, out of sight. I love it, although the price seems a bit high for a moulded plastic item with a beanbag base. But, it is a quality item that will last, so I guess it’s worth the price.

This is so much better than the windshield suction cup or peel and stick dashboard mount. When you get out of the car, you can hide it and take the GPS unit out of the car and carry it in a pocket. With the suction mount you can see the imprint of it and you might get someone breaking in your car looking for the GPS.

I own the Garmin Nuvi 660 and over the last five months have tried alternatives to the suction cup on the windshield–industrial strength velcro on the dashboard(doesn’t work in the summer because of the heat)and a vent mount(I got one from Mount Guys, but it kept coming out on sharp turns). Then I decided to give the friction mount a try, and must say that it is the best solution, esepcially for someone like me who has multiple vehicles.

The dashboard in my cars vary in shape(level, slanted), size (wide, narrow) and material (vinyl, leather). It makes no difference. This product securely holds my Nuvi in place at high speeds, sudden stops on the brake, and sharp turns. The trick for me is to place the product so that it is as close to the windshield as possible rather than on the edge of the dashboard.

It takes just a second to connect and disconnect the Nuvi from this unit, and using it in different cars is effortless. There is nothing to attach (execept the Nuvi to the product) because this product is essentially a weighted beanbag, but designed much better than a standard beanbag.

Keep in mind that no mounting system is foolproof, but compared to everything else that I have tried, this is the best way to go.

Given a choice between a suction-mount and a beanbag, one would go with the suction mount, right?

As counter-intuitive as it is, the suction mount that works so well initially eventually fails — sending your Garmin to the floor or having you play catch while you’re supposed to be paying attention to the road.

This thing, you’d guess, would slip and slide. But, it doesn’t Yet again, I’m not taking hair-pin curves at 60. (The “60″ refers to the vehicle speed, not my age.) Maybe you could get it to slide. But, you’d really have to work at it.

The only sour note is that it isn’t complete in itself — you’ve got to take the top off the suction mount and use it on this mount. I guess it would have cut into profits too much to provide this unit with its own attachment.

Rather than clue in everyone that you’ve got a GPS in the car, just put this unit on the floor when you park.

On an Accord, there is plenty of room for it. If your dashboard has no depth, this isn’t your solution.

For all of us who have owned a Garmin Nüvi and experienced the utter failure that is the suction mount, this is the redemption! I’d been looking at these for a while but was very skeptical. However, when I purchased a Garmin StreetPilot 2720 for my motorcycle, it came with one of these. After using it for a while for the StreetPilot, I decided to buy one and give it a shot for the Nüvi. I was not disappointed.

You can put it anywhere that there is a fairly level surface and it stays put. I’ve never had it slide across the dash when cornering either. As an added plus, it is easy to toss under the seat when parking somewhere. I highly recommend this product to replace that miserable SUCK-tion mount.

Did you know that even if you remove your Garmin AND the windshield mount thieves may still break into your vehicle looking for your portable GPS? Do you know why?

That convenient little windshield mount leaves a telltale suction cup mark on the windshield and the crooks know what to look for. They figure there is a good chance you hid that GPS in the vehicle and in a matter of seconds it is theirs, after all there’s only a few places to hide something in there.

Not only are you out that expensive little GPS but the thief now has your address and maybe the addresses of your friends and family. Like to add your own personal pictures to that GPS? Now he knows what your kids look like. And he also knows the chances are excellent you also own many other expensive electronic gadgets, all just waiting for him to pick up.

Even if you password protect that GPS so a thief can’t access it do you really want to go through the hassle and expense of filing an insurance claim, buying a new GPS and programing it?

This dashboard mount is the simple and inexpensive solution. Stash it under the seat before you get out of the vehicle and take your Garmin with you, just in case ’cause you never know who’s watching.

And one more suggestion…as you arrive at your destination drop this thing onto the seat beside you so the “glow” of it isn’t visible to all around you. And keep your doors locked.

You can call me paranoid but safe… :)

Why have a windshield mount that just works in one car? This one makes the garmin truly portable. Sharp turns, bumps, quick stops does not move the unit at all. I have the Nuvi 660 and its the only mount you need.

I just wish Garmin makes this standard and offers the windshield mount as optional. But its not a perfect world, I suppose.

I have a Honda accord, Ford Edge and I have used this in Honda Odyssey, Toyota Corolla and Chevy Equinox. None of the cars that I used this, with my Nuvi, had any problems with the base moving out of place, etc.

Garmin’s portable friction mount is perfect, simply put. I’ve used it to keep my Nuvi at bay in my wife’s Camry, my Ranger, and my work van. While my wife’s car is used primarily for highway and city travel, my truck and my work van frequently find their way onto pothole-laden back roads, gravel roads, dirt roads and even in construction zones. My truck and van bounce all over the place and this friction mount doesn’t move. The console on my van has numerous slots and open spaces for keeping work related items, and I often place my GPS over one of these holes with only the outer edges of the friction mount touching an actual surface. This doesn’t prevent the mount from doing its job, though. It stays put for the long haul.

It has very solid construction, a locking mechanism to keep your GPS in place and can easily be taken off of your dash or (in the case of my van), the console and tucked out of the way so that potential thieves aren’t tipped off to your possession of a GPS.

I highly recommend this friction mount for the simple fact that it does what it says it will do, and that’s keep your GPS in sight when you need it and out of sight when you don’t.

I rent cars all the time while traveling on business, and this dash mount works perfectly in all the rental cars I’ve been in — probably 10 different car models. It is somewhat heavy by design (uses metal BBs as ballast). But it’s worth it for the peace of mind to know your $400 GPS won’t go flying off the dash while making a sudden turn or stop (which I do often when driving in strange cities). Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard Mount for Nüvi Series and StreetPilot C5XX Series GPS Navigators (C530, C550 and C580)

We recently bought our Garmin GPS unit; I didn’t want a windshield mount (too tempting for thieves). Ideally, I wanted something for the dashboard but didn’t know anything like that existed, so when I saw this, hubby and I decided to get it. We were on a 1400-mile journey and had never used a GPS unit before.

This dashboard mount is fantastic. Once we placed it on the dashboard, it never moved, even around sharp turns. It was easy to adjust so that both of us could see our GPS unit. The entire unit was easy to hide if we were going to be out of the car for just a couple of minutes; it was also easy to remove our GPS unit from the dashboard mount when we wanted to take everything out of the car. When we left the car, there was NO evidence that we even had a GPS unit, which is exactly what we wanted.

We couldn’t be more pleased. This mount enabled us to have our GPS unit exactly where I (the driver) wanted it without obstructing my vision in any way. And hubby could make slight changes if necessary so that he could see the unit as well. In addition, if hubby wanted to program in a new destination or check for gas prices, etc, he could easily take the unit off the dashboard to do so. This made for a pleasant driving experience all the way around.

We also got (locally) a carrying case for our GPS, and the dashboard mount fits into it too.

    Highly recommended!

The original suction mount kept on falling and left a nasty black residue on my glass. This frictional mount sits on my Camry dash steadily w/o a single incident for almost half a year. When I needed to remove it for security purposes all I had to do is lift it off the dash and hide it under my seat. I am very satisfied w/ this product and wish Garmin ditch the suction mount (illegal in California anyway, I heard) and include this mount in the package.

I thought this would only be used on long trips but I never remove my Nuvi 350 from the mount because it’s way more convenient than I had imagined. I drive a 2005 Honda Civic and I grease the dash down with Armorall pretty good … this mount does not slip. I drive like a complete idiot too, according to my wife and kids, so they give this thing props for staying put too. Speaking of Armorall, it does leave a dry spot on the dash; I guess that’s the “footprint” some other people were talking about, but if you don’t grease it down like me then that won’t happen. If you get a Nuvi GPS and you’re curious about the best method for keeping the thing in one place, this is your answer. I stuffed all the little suction cups and double-sided tape in a drawer because this is all a guy (or gal) needs.

This holder for the Nuvi GPS works great and is much superior to the holder that came with the product. It is easily movable, making it easy to to hide the GPS in the vechicle; yet it stays exactly where you put it while you drive. At this price, it’s a steal for such a fine product!

After I bought my Garmin nüvi 205W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator I found out that the included suction mount wasn’t sturdy enough for my car. When I searched for a better mount, every site I looked at recommended this one. The price was right, here on Amazon and once I received it the “Frustration-Free Packaging” was appreciated.

It now sits on the dash of my Chevy Trailblazer and hasn’t budged in over 800+ miles. Now while I’m very pleased with this product, it may not work with every vehicle. It’s great if you have a flat surface to place it on or even one with a bit of a slope. It also doesn’t seem to matter whether the dash is rough or smooth – it stays put either way. The last nice thing about the Garmin Portable Friction Mount is that it’s not permanent. If I want I can transfer it to another vehicle quickly and easily.

Overall I think the sheer number of positive reviews make this item a easy purchase, at least it was for me.

I’ve been using the Garmin Friction mount for my Nuvi 350 for over a month and never had a problem with it. This mount is much more convenient than the windshield mount. I now can adjust it’s position to a more comfortable place on my dashboard, making it easier to reach and see while driving. My main concern before purchasing it was that the friction mount would slide around or fall off the dashboard during hard turns, etc. It has not and always stays put! I have not had to adjust my driving style for it so I’m very pleased. The other thing that’s great about this mount is how easy it is to pick up and just hide it under the seat when I park in an iffy neighborhood, something you could not do with the windshield mount. I was happy enough with it that I also bought the same mount for my father-in-law. He’s very happy using his with the Nuvi 650.

I sell real estate and I’m in more than one car on a regular basis. This device holds the Garmin securely, it doesn’t slip or slide even when I make sharp turns or fast stops (moves done to test the device, not to frighten my clients), and the GPS is easy to get in and out of the device. I also like that I can take it off the dash and store it out of sight when parked so I don’t advertise that there is a several hundred dollar device in my car that a thief might like to have.

I really thought that this thing would be crap. So, why did I buy it…simply, I have a nuvi 670, and my other-half and I use it in multiple cars. The suction cup mount for the windshield is not always the best option, and we only had one of those sticky disc things – furthermore, I did not want to use a sticky disc in EVERY rental car!

I was so skeptical, that I put it on the dash without the nuvi (too afraid of breaking an $800 system). It didn’t even MOVE! So, then I tried taking corners faster – still it didn’t move. I’m really not willing to flip any of my cars just so that I can say that it moved.

This little guy is great for putting in your friends car without putting horrible circular dirt on the windshield. It is also lightweight to travel with it and put it in a rental car, and can be stored away so that there is no sign of a nuvi in sight for those thieving little sods that will break your car window for a couple of candy wrappers and 27 cents!

I purchased this product based on the reviews from others. I have not been disappointed. The Grarmin Portable Mount allows easy moving of the Garmin between cars. It also allows you to easily set the unit on the floor, out of view when you would like. I have used the unit on long trips, with some sharp corners and in local traffic with emergency stops and it works perfectly. It is, however, a product which was moved to production without the need for pleasing visual design….some might say ugly….but it is 100 percent on function.

The Garmin StreetPilot is an amazing driving tool, and I don’t know what I ever did without it! I have been living in Central Florida for 2 years and do not know my way around at all. I am originally a New Yorker and felt stressed driving anywhere in Florida because I would always get lost so I never left the house! I can go anywhere now and with confidence BUT… the screen is so small on my Garmin that I have trouble seeing the display with the included windshield suction cup mount plus the fact with the hot Florida sun it falls off on its own! I like to see the display because it shows the distance before the next turn and I like that. I drive a Lexus RX300 and was NOT going to let somebody install a permanent mounting system NO WAY JOSE! I did not want to screw up my beautiful interior with any permanent structure! So I hunted the internet for a solution! This Friction mount is the best! It holds my Garmin I3 perfectly and allows me to place it as close as I need it on my dash! Does it slide around? NOPE! I have made some hairy turns and have not made it budge yet! Its bean bags at the bottom with rubber underneath and the spot where the Garmin is placed is a ball joint like on the windshield mount. You just remove your Garmin off the windshield mount ball and place it on the new Friction ball. You can swivel your Garmin so that you can see it the way you want. When I leave the car I just grab the whole unit, bean bag and all and place it in my carry bag. I don’t have to release it like with the windshield mount. For the ladies, if you have a decent sized purse/pocketbook (it fits in mine and I don’t use the huge tote type bags) the entire thing should fit. The little sides of the bean bags fold over so it’s pretty flexible. BUY THIS, it’s the only thing other than rechargeable batteries and a charger that you would need to buy for your Garmin.

It never moved or fell off the dash – very stable. We could put it away once we arrived so it wasn’t obvious that we had a GPS in the car. My husband immediately “borrowed” it (he is the kind that has to use his GPS to get to work everyday even though he always drives the same route!!). So, I had to buy another one (for my husband so that I can have mine back).

This mount is much better than the suction cup that came with the Nuvi (it never could hold a suction in my car). It also “travels” better since you don’t have to have the stick-on disk required by the suction cup. Note of caution: whatever is used to weight down the mount appears as tiny nails in the x-ray screening machines in airports.

Got this to use with the Nuvi. Holds well on the dash, easy to move from car-car. Would be better if the arm would fold over somehow, as it sticks up and takes up a bit more space when stuck in a bag or briefcase, but it really isn’t that much of an issue.

    Good accessory, highly recommended.

It allowed me to move the unit closer to me (the windshield on my minivan is steep, so the unit was hard to reach previously). The base stays in place very well, even under hard cornering. It is also more convenient to move the unit to the floor when I park, putting it out of line of sight. No longer do I have suction cup imprints on my window either.

I am using this mount with a Nuvi 855.

Overall I think it is fantastic. I have used a friends car often in which there is a GPS (TomTom) stuck with a suction cup to the circular disc mounted to the dash. I found her GPS would often fall off when I was touching the screen. I would resort to taking it off and fiddling with it on my lap whilst drive. Not such a safe way to go. Also, with that kind of mount it was not easy for the passenger (my beloved co-pilot) to access the GPS or move it around or take it into her hands for full control (an important manoeuvre for full co-piloting).

It was because of the experience with my friends mount that I bought this one at the same time as my Nuvi 855. I am very happy with this mount.

PROS – Things I really like about it:

    - It is SUPER grippy. It has an incredible surface on the underside which makes it not slide at all. Even if I try to nudge it 8as a test), it is hard to move it. Excellent. There is certainly NO movement whilst driving, even when I am driving fast into a tight bend. And yet, if I want to reposition it, or my passenger/co-pilot wants to change the position, it’s so easy. Just lift it a little (as in, just a slight upward motion whilst pushing it to a different position) and move it.

    - The Nuvi rotates well in all directions. It rotates from side-to-side, pivoting where the mount arm goes into the mount base. Very nice. Makes it real easy for my co-pilot to view it and take control when I am hectic with busy traffic. It also pivots where the bracket joins the mount arm, which is a ball-and-socket connection. I can see that the fixed dash/windscreen mount that comes with the 855 uses a ball-and-socket connection too, so nothing extra gained in that regard.

    - When put away, NOTHING remains on the window or the dash. No round disk stuck to the dash. No circular mark left on the windscreen. Both of these are giveaways that a GPS may be hanging out someone in the vehicle… and is something savvy potential GPS thieves know to look out for.

    - When it comes time to put it away, the Nuvi easy detaches from the bracket. Requires pushing a button as you grab it. One relatively easy manoeuvre. Then putting the mount away, is as simple as picking it up and sticking it somewhere. Couldn’t be easier. (See Bulky issue below)

    CONS:

-It is a little bulky. I can’t, for instance, stick it under the seat without first detaching the connector arm from it. This makes for an additional step when getting in and out of the car. I then have two objects to store/hide… a mount base and an arm with a bracket stuck to it. I find this a little inconvenient, though not a major issue.

    - It is relatively heavy. I travel (internationally) a fair bit, and I’ll be taking this GPS and the mount with me. It is on the heavy side compared to other mounting solutions, beacuse it has four little “sand bags” on it. But if you are primarily just using this in your home car… I don’t think this will be an issue at all.

    - Ball and socket system: I do actually prefer the way the TomTom connected to its mount. It would just slide down onto the mount. No buttons, no bracket, and no bracket based DC power system (this last point may be specific to my Nuvi 855). This means more parts to wear out and/or break. This, to me, appears to be the weakest part in the over all design. The Nuvi is solid. The mount is super solid. But this additional bracket that connects the Nuvi to the mount arm has clips, and spring loaded buttons… relatively weak compared to the other parts.

I prefer the way the TomTom attaches to its mount. There are some slots build into the moulded rear panel on the TomTom. I can see, however, that this potentially is what makes the TomTom thicker than my Nuvo 855.

So, this attaching system on the Nuvi is something I can easily live with… as I like how thin it is.

    CONCLUSION:

The cons I have mentioned, are purely to be thorough in my review. I don’t consider them an issue for myself. I think this mount simply rocks. I have researched all the mount solutions available on Amazon and the Garmin site, and I think this one is the best one available.

What’s more, it’s a great price here on Amazon.

Bottom line? Get one with your Nuvi order!!

    TIPS AND TRICKS

    - Getting the bracket on and off of the ball on the arm can seem hard to do. The trick is that you need do it on the side of the ball (any side, top, left, right, bottom). Just stick the ball into the bracket with the arm itself touching the bracket (as a result of it going in at an angle rather than straight on). Then it pops in and out easily.

Now with the friction mount I’m very happy because I can use it whenever I want. Or hide it if not.

    [UPDATE] July 24, 2009

I didn’t have the chance to try it on the road until now.

I went on a road trip in my TrailBlazer for 10 hours with my Nuvi 255W switched on and sitting on the dashboard for the whole duration. It never moved from it’s place. Went on pumps, tight turns, sudden stops and fast acceleration and this thing never moved.

    I love it :D

After discovering this product, one wonders why we ever stuck those adhesive mounts to our windshields to announce to passing thieves, ‘Stop here! Easy hit!’.

I was costing my organization $10 per day to rent a GPS from National Car Rental until it dawned on me that the same, fabulously functional friction mount that the rental companies used might be available commercially. Voilà, I now take my own Garmin Nüvi with me on trips, stick the compact Portable Dashboard Mount in my briefcase, and use my own GPS rather than rent one at expensive per-day rates.

A side benefit is that use of my own GPS allows me to accumulate destinations in my database rather than use them once and hand them back in a rented GPS unit.

The Friction Dashboard Mount is preternaturally stable. You have to be doing some serious slalom moves in your car to get it to slide from its intended place on the dash of your car.

I find myself using this mount in my own car at home now rather than going back to the adhesive windshield mount.

This is one of those rare no-fault, simple-design, highly effective products that brings a categorical improvement to one of life’s recurrent experiences at a reasonable cost.

I purchased the dashboard mount for my Nuvi 650 based on the recommendations of the reviewers. It did not slide during hard cornering, stopping or acceleration and can be adjusted to any viewing angle. A plus is that it is easy to remove the mount-gps from the dash and hide away when you leave your car. It is very easy to use and one of my concerns was whether it would be difficult to remove the GPS unit from the mount. One push of a release button and it’s loose. Wish I had invented it!

Now this is more like it…the suction cup mount that came with my GPS did fine for about a week…then it lost it’s suction and the GPS kept falling off the windshield…not something you want to happen with a piece of electronics. A great value here…I saw if for $40 bucks at Circuit City.

For some reason I thought this was going to be big and bulky, but it’s quite small, which is good because it’s easy to put anywhere on the dash (out of the way of the passenger side airbag of course). I popped the charger off the original window suction cup thing and popped it on this gadget, no problem. I used to try to balance my Nuvi in my cup holder. It’s so nice to have it up at my line of sight. It’s got a sticky vinyl underside that grips the dash so it can’t go anywher. Incredibly fast shipping. And the price was great besides!

I had to get this mount because to my dismay the suction cup on the windshield mount that came with my Garmin stopped working and the mount would fall off windshield. Dash mount is a great invention. I did not want to mount my Garmin on the windshield as I have my EZ Pass there, and the portable dash mount allows me to move it around between driver/passenger easily as well as to any car I want it in. With the ability to rotate the Garmin on the mount in most any direction, you can keep glare to a minimum and visibility to a maximum. It is heavy/stable enough that is stays put on the dashboard, unless you are driving the Grand Prix of course.

This mount works just great. It sits on the windshield and never moves. It is also easy to take on a trip, since it breaks down and doesn’t take up much room. The only problem I had was in trying to initially put the Nuvi mount onto the arm that came with this mount. I was concerned about how to take the ball out of the Nuvi mount, since I didn’t want to break it. It just took a little pulling and it popped right out so it could be pushed onto the new mount.

You couldn’t ask for much more in a mounting system. The friction mount is sturdy enough to hold my nuvi 660 at a variety of angles, and doesn’t slide around the dash while driving. Most importantly, there’s absolutely no installation or assembly required – just set the thing on the dash, pop the nuvi on, and you’re good to go! When you’re safely at your destination, you can pluck the nuvi right off, pick up the mount, and stick it in your glovebox or under the seat. This way, thieves aren’t wise to the fact that you might have a GPS in the car.

5 stars for garmin for an excellently designed mount, and 5 stars for Amazon for a great price and fast shipping!

Due to the fact that I switch the GPS between my wifes car and my own, it provides a very excellent solution. Also, the windshield mounts target your vehicles for theft, I decided long ago not to put one on. This mount is extremely staple and also sits much lower so it doesn’t cause the slightest distraction and I absolutely love it.

I wanted something that didn’t let the world know I had a GPS when I wasn’t in the car. This is the ticket. Except for some pretty aggressive acceleration, this thing won’t move on the dashboard. While taking expressway entrances at tire screaming speeds, this bad boy keeps planted. I keep it hooked up and store it on the floor kind of under the passenger seat when I’m not in the car. Keeps it far enough out of the way so as not to interfere with passenger feet, but close enough that I can throw it up on the dash in a second.

I just mean, they refer to it as a beanbag mount, but it sure feels to me like it’s filled with sand. However, that is of no consequence vis a vis functionality.

I purchased this along with the Garmin nüvi 260W 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator, which comes with a suction mount for the windshield. It was a wise decision to purchase this. I put the Garmin in it and plunk it wherever I want on the dash. It stays put while I’m driving, and if I want to move it to another spot, I can. So I’m not stuck with an OOPS permanent mount with the suction cup. Also, though we’re a two-car household, we only need one GPS unit, and we can just pick this up off the dash and move it from vehicle to vehicle. Voila! Besides, buying this in lieu of two GPSs left me extra money for Baconnaise when it was Deal of the Day :)

I really didn’t like the idea of the suction mount on the windshield. Those things make it hard to see pedestrians in the crosswalk. Besides, if I mounted my Garmin on the windshield, my rosary would clank into it. So I recommend this for anyone with a GPS unit – just make sure yours will fit this one!

I got this for my Garmin Nuvi 650 since in California you can’t put anything on your windshield. I have heard many people say and write that the windshield mount that came with their nuvi 650 to not be that efficient. I at first had the same problem but then realized how that you have to lower the lever on the windshield mounting to the very bottom then push up in order to make sure the suction was gripping the tightest.

However, for this unit that I am using now, it works great. I first put it on my dashboard with my unit on it to make sure that it would slip and slide. Even tested it by making some sharp turns at reasonable high speeds. It didnt budge, i think it is because of the stick type service on the bottom. I then used it with my unit and it has been working just as well as if I had mounted it on the windshield.

Another good feature about this is that you can easily remove it from the dashboard so that no one knows that you have a gps unit in your car. Its a good product.

This mount works beautifully – it’s absolutely stable on the dashboard yet easy to move around if I have a passenger who wants to play with it. And it’s super easy to stash whenever I park. Highly recommended.

I’d tried the supplied dashboard mount first, and really regretted it. It was a hassle to snap the Nuvi on and off the dashboard mount, or to snap the dashboard mount off its permanent adhesive disk (now permanently stuck on my dashboard – yuck!) and I had major trouble getting the Nuvi angled the way I wanted it once it was on the dashboard mount. And as others have said, leaving the mount on the dash invites theft. With the friction mount, I just move the whole thing off the dash and drop it into a bookbag on the floor. The bookbag matches the carpet, so is virtually unnoticeable even if someone is looking in the window.

I’ve tried it in four different vehicles and it secured my Nuvi perfectly. The best part is you can lift it off the dash and set it on the floor out of sight and out of the sun when you park your car. The suction cup setup would occasionally fall off the window while driving and was a severe hazard to deal with because it takes two hands to put it it back on the windshield. This product had 5 stars so I gave it a try. It works like a charm. I keep mine on the left side of the dash in the corner. Seems to be out of the way and doesn’t obstruct my view…also fits perfectly like it was made to be there. Has 4 bean bags that act as weights and it doesn’t move an inch. Much better solution for anyone who doesn’t want to risk ruining their car windshield or dash. So easy to use in any car incase you switch vehicles.

This item works great. I travel to California now and then and it is always an issue how to position my GPS since you can’t attach it to the windshield. This solves the problem. It is very stable (more than I thought it would be) and the holder slips out to make packing a breeze. Lots of swivel gives you just about any viewing option you need. And then you can lock that position in place. The price is great here on Amazon. You can’t go wrong. I use it more than I had thought (not just in California). When I park the car I just move the whole thing to the floor which hides the fact I have a GPS in the car. I never took the windshield mount down in the past, which was a dead giveaway. When I bought this mount 6 months ago, the user reviews gave the impression it is a flawless accessory (as of now, 2289 reviews with an average of 4.9+ !!). I could not agree more. After months of use, on my car and other cars, I still find myself smiling and thanking Garmin for this wonderful device.

My car has a sloping dash. A rental car I recently used had a steep slope and I was skeptical the mount will stay put. I was wrong. This mount refuses to move even a tenth of an inch from where you leave it.

There is no “mounting” step. You just place it on the dash! When your driving is done, you pick it up and keep it away from unfriendly eyes. The nuvi series clips on in a second – so easy that you can do that in the dark. I find the “mount” and “dismount” procedure so simple that I stow away the device and GPS everytime I park and leave my car unattended on a multi-stop shopping trip. I cannot imagine myself doing that with a suction mount.

The round knob allows you to position the GPS at just the angle you want. The GPS screen is some 4 inches above the dashboard, which is more or less at the height most easy to view. I never felt the mount or GPS is intruding my view of the road.

I wish I had one worthy complain to write to add some balance to my review. I just do not have a single complain.

We bought a Garmin 350 a couple weeks ago and I have to say the suction cup mount was a waste of box space. I read some reviews on the friction mount and bought it.

We got it 2 days ago and it is fantastic. No need to attach the unit to your dash or worrying about it shifting/falling off. We drove through a state park that was unpaved at many points and the terrain was rough. Our Garmin 350 didn’t move an inch even though I’m a bit of a lead foot.

As others have stated, I also like the ability to just lift the unit off the dash and set it on the floor.

We have all had our issues with the gps units sliding around the dash of our vehicles. I couldnt take it anymore! I saw this one in my research for the perfect dash mount, and was suspicous of it moving about, but ordered one to check it out. After installing it in my wifes car everyone has been amazed at how simple it is and how incredably stable it is.Also you can put the whole thing on the floor as a unit, so you dont leave the mount on the dash. I have since ordered 5 more for family.

I used the friction mount with the Nuvi 350. It is highly recommended over the suction cup mount. You’ll have the flexibility of relocating the GPS unit on the fly. You can also have passengers plot destinations while your driving and then place the unit back on the dash. The friction mount will also stay put in spirited driving and heavy braking.

To me this is better than suctioning and unsuctioning something to your window.

Keeps product there and easily removed when you park. I stick the whole thing w/GPS under the seat.

I hated the window suction that always managed to fall off. This is perhaps a little bit bigger than I expected, but manages to stay right where I put it and is so simple to use. No levers to pull, suction cups to adhere…just set it down on your dash where you want it and it stays there!

The suction mount for my StreetPilot i5 kept falling off the windshield. I wasn’t certain this product was designed for the i5 or whether it would fit on the dashboard of my RAV4. The answer is yes on both and the GPS does not slide on turns or stops. I highly recommend this product. It should have been included with the i5 (and other Garmin’s) as an alterntive to the suction mount.

When I recieved this mount with my Garmin for Christmas I told my wife that it wouldn’t work in my car because my dash is small, slanted and slick. I was pleasantly surprised to find it works great in my Mercedes. I highly recommend this portable friction mount for the Garmin, it’s totally amazing.

Great product. Beats the windshield suction device which is illegal in California. It is very portable and stays in a fixed position wherever placed on the dashboard. It does not move even on a road of pot holes. Great device, works well with my Garmin Nuvi. Highly recommended.
